A print cover is not simply two pages placed side by side. Its exact size depends on the book's trim size, final page count, paper and ink selection, spine width, and bleed. Calculate it only after the interior is stable, then build the design on KDP's downloadable template.

What the KDP cover calculator needs

KDP generates a template from a specific combination of production choices. Prepare these values before opening the calculator:

• Binding: paperback or hardcover.
• Cover type: the available type for the selected binding.
• Interior and paper: black and white, standard color, or premium color, plus an available paper choice.
• Reading direction: left-to-right or right-to-left.
• Trim size: the final width and height of one printed interior page.
• Page count: the count after the formatted interior has processed, not the page count of an earlier draft.

These inputs matter because two books with the same trim size can require different cover widths. A 200-page cream-paper novel has a different spine from a 200-page standard-color workbook. Paperback and hardcover templates are also structurally different, so do not resize a paperback cover and reuse it for hardcover.

KDP paperback cover size formula

A paperback cover upload is one landscape-oriented PDF page containing the back cover, spine, and front cover. For left-to-right books, those sections run from left to right in that order. The base formulas are:

• Full cover width = 0.125 + trim width + spine width + trim width + 0.125
• Full cover height = 0.125 + trim height + 0.125

In simpler terms, full width is twice the trim width, plus spine width, plus 0.25 inch. Full height is trim height plus 0.25 inch. The extra 0.125 inch on each outside edge is bleed that will be trimmed during manufacturing.

Current paperback spine formulas

Do not use these paperback formulas for hardcover. Hardcover templates include wrap and hinge areas that the official calculator determines from the selected specifications.

Worked example: 6 x 9 cover with 300 pages

Consider a 300-page, black-and-white paperback printed on cream paper at a 6 x 9 inch trim size.

1. Calculate the spine: 300 × 0.0025 = 0.75 in.
2. Calculate the width: 0.125 + 6 + 0.75 + 6 + 0.125 = 13.0 in.
3. Calculate the height: 0.125 + 9 + 0.125 = 9.25 in.

The full cover PDF is therefore 13 x 9.25 inches. The front and back each finish at 6 x 9 inches, while the 0.75-inch spine sits between them. This example also shows why “What size is a 6 x 9 cover?” has no single width: page count and paper determine the missing spine measurement.

How to use the downloaded KDP template

KDP's ZIP download provides a dimensioned template that can be used as a guide layer in software capable of opening PNG or PDF and exporting PDF. Create the document at the exact full-cover dimensions, then place the template without stretching it.

1. Keep the template aligned. Do not crop, rotate, or rescale it. Confirm its outer edge matches the document edge.
2. Design beneath the guide. Put artwork on lower layers and keep the template visible while positioning important elements.
3. Extend backgrounds through bleed. Any color or image meant to reach an edge must continue to the document edge, beyond the trim line.
4. Respect safe areas. Keep titles, author names, logos, and other important content inside the template's safe boundaries.
5. Center spine content on the spine. Allow at least 0.0625 inch on either side of spine text so normal binding variation does not push it onto a cover panel.
6. Remove the guide before export. Template lines, labels, and sample barcode boxes must not appear in the submitted artwork.

Bleed, trim, and safe area are different

• Bleed is artwork outside the final trim line. KDP requires 0.125 inch at the top, bottom, and outside cover edges.
• Trim line is approximately where the printed cover is cut and folded. Small manufacturing shifts are normal.
• Safe area is where text and important images should remain so they are not trimmed or pushed across a fold.

Background artwork should fill the bleed, but a subtitle should not. KDP says front- and back-cover text should sit at least 0.125 inch inside the trim lines. Treat the generated template as the final authority because it also marks spine folds, spine margins, and the barcode region for the selected book.

Spine text rules

KDP prints spine text only when a book has more than 79 pages. If the paperback has fewer than 79 pages, omit spine text entirely. Cover Creator uses a minimum of 80 pages. Even above that threshold, a very narrow spine may not support the title treatment you imagined.

Keep spine text at least 0.0625 inch from each side of the spine. Use a readable size and strong contrast, and do not let decorative rules or logos cross fold lines. KDP requires cover text to be at least 7 points, but a technically valid title can still be too small to read on a shelf. Print the template at actual size before approving the design.

Plan the barcode area

You may upload a cover with a compliant barcode or let KDP add one. If KDP adds it, leave the template's barcode area free of text and meaningful artwork. A quiet or solid background is safer than placing a review quote, author photo, or important illustration underneath it.

The barcode belongs on the back cover. Right-to-left templates reverse the cover panels, and the calculator accounts for that layout. Do not mirror a left-to-right design manually without generating the correct template.

Common KDP cover-size mistakes

• Using a front-cover size for the complete file: print covers require back, spine, front, and bleed on one page.
• Guessing spine width from word count: the processed page count and production choices determine it.
• Reusing a template after edits: added front matter or reflowed chapters change the spine.
• Adding bleed to the spine: outside-edge bleed affects total width; the spine is already included between the two trim-width panels.
• Stretching the template: this makes every safe area and fold line unreliable.
• Submitting the guide layer: template labels and colored boundaries are instructions, not printable artwork.
• Ignoring the physical proof: a screen cannot fully reveal trim variation, spine alignment, dark print tones, or small shelf text.

1. Finish developmental editing and copyediting.
2. Choose the print specification and format the KDP interior with correct trim and margins.
3. Upload or otherwise finalize the interior and stabilize its page count.
4. Generate the exact cover template.
