Amazon Author Central Setup: A Practical Author Page Guide
Amazon Author Central gives readers one place to see who you are and which books you wrote. A complete page cannot rescue a weak manuscript or guarantee sales, but it can remove uncertainty, connect your catalog, and make an interested reader's next step easier.
The short version: publish your first book, join Author Central from KDP's Marketing page, claim the correct title, add a reader-focused biography and professional photo, verify every edition, and repeat the check in each marketplace you actively serve.
This guide is based on Amazon's official Author Central and Authors & Contributors guidance, reviewed August 4, 2026. Features and marketplace availability change, so treat the options in your own account as the final authority.
What Author Central actually does
An Author Page gathers your biography and claimed books on Amazon. Author Central also lets you monitor customer reviews, Amazon Best Sellers Rank, and follower count. Amazon currently lists editorial reviews and BookScan sales information as U.S.-only features.
The page is separate from your KDP Bookshelf. KDP is where you publish and manage editions; Author Central is where you claim your public author identity and connect eligible books to it. Amazon says an Author Page does not come automatically with KDP, and a book must be published before you can create one.
| Task | Use KDP | Use Author Central |
|---|---|---|
| Upload manuscript, cover, price, and territories | Yes | No |
| Set the author name printed in book metadata | Yes, before publication | No |
| Claim a published book for your Author Page | Start from Marketing | Complete the claim |
| Add or update your public biography | No | Yes |
| Monitor reviews, rank, and followers | Limited separate reports | Yes, where supported |
Prepare these assets before you register
- A published identifier: keep the ASIN or ISBN for one book under the author name you want to claim.
- A short biography: write roughly 80–150 words explaining what you write, who it is for, and why you are equipped to write it.
- A clear author photo: use a current, high-resolution portrait or a consistent brand image appropriate to the name.
- An accurate catalog list: record each edition, format, series, co-author, and pen name so you claim only books that are yours.
- Consistent public details: align the spelling of your author name with your covers, KDP metadata, website, and social profiles.
How to create an Amazon Author Central account
- Sign in to KDP and open the Marketing page.
- Find the Author Central section and choose the marketplace for your Author Page.
- Select Manage author page. Amazon redirects you to Author Central.
- Choose Join for free and register with your KDP account information.
- Search for one of your books by author name, ISBN, or ASIN.
- Select the exact book and confirm that you are the named author.
- Complete any identity or rights verification Amazon requests, then review the resulting page.
Amazon currently supports full Author Central setup for Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, Amazon.co.jp, and Amazon.com.br. Author Pages may also appear in additional stores, including Canada and Australia, when books are available there; Amazon notes that some of those pages use U.S. information and cannot be edited locally.
Write a biography that helps readers decide
A useful biography is specific without becoming a life history. Start with the genre or problem readers associate with your books. Add one or two relevant credibility details, then close with the themes or experience readers can expect across your catalog.
A simple biography structure
- Identity: state your author name and the kind of books you write.
- Reader promise: describe the experience, insight, or outcome your work offers.
- Credibility: add relevant professional, lived, research, or creative experience.
- Continuity: mention a series, recurring theme, or what you are writing next.
For example: “Maya Chen writes practical guides for first-time freelancers who want calmer, more predictable businesses. After a decade managing client projects, she now turns real workflow problems into clear weekly systems. Her books focus on pricing, boundaries, and sustainable growth.” This is more useful than a list of unrelated awards, hobbies, and adjectives.
Do not invent credentials, reviews, sales numbers, or awards. If AI helped you brainstorm or tighten the biography, verify every factual statement and make the final wording sound like the real person or brand behind the books.
Claim every book carefully
Search the Books area by title, author name, ASIN, or ISBN and inspect the cover, format, and contributors before claiming. Similar titles and shared names make hurried claims risky. Add your Kindle, paperback, and hardcover editions when they appear, then check whether Amazon has linked the formats on the retail detail page.
Author Central can associate your books with your page, but it does not repair incorrect source metadata. If a title, subtitle, or author name is wrong in KDP, solve the underlying book-detail issue first. If formats are not linked despite matching details, use Amazon's support process rather than creating misleading duplicate listings.
Handle pen names and co-authored books cleanly
A pen name should be treated as a distinct reader-facing identity. Keep its biography, photo choice, genre promise, and catalog coherent. Add the pen name through the Author Central workflow and claim only the books published under that name. Do not collapse unrelated genres onto one page simply because the same person wrote them.
For a co-authored book, each eligible author can claim the title for their own page. The KDP book record should credit contributors accurately. Author Central does not give you permission to claim a book merely because you edited, designed, or published it; the displayed author and contributor metadata should support the relationship.
Use Author Follow without overpromising
Readers can select Follow on an Author Page or book detail page. Amazon says eligible followers may receive release or pre-order notifications if they permit Amazon marketing emails and have not already ordered the book. That makes a complete page useful for catalog continuity, especially for series authors.
Follower count is not the same as an email list you own, and a follow does not guarantee a notification, sale, review, or ranking improvement. Amazon's current guidance explicitly says follower count does not affect Best Sellers Rank. Use it as one reader connection, not as a replacement for permission-based direct communication.
Your post-setup quality check
- Open the public Author Page while signed out and test it on a phone.
- Confirm the name, photo, biography, and claimed books are correct.
- Check that each cover opens the intended detail page and edition.
- Verify that series order and linked formats make sense to a new reader.
- Review other marketplaces where the book has meaningful sales or marketing.
- Save a quarterly reminder to add new releases and remove outdated biography claims.
After every launch, revisit Author Central once the book is live. Claim the new title, check format links, and read the page as a reader deciding what to buy next. A small, accurate catalog is better than an impressive-looking page containing the wrong editions.
Where Author Central fits in an AI-assisted workflow
Author Central is a presentation and catalog tool, not a substitute for editorial work. Before promotion, revise an AI-assisted manuscript for factual accuracy, originality, permissions, pacing, and continuity. Follow KDP's current AI-content disclosure rules during title setup, and never use an author biography to imply expertise you do not have.
Your strongest marketing asset remains a book that delivers what its description promises. The Author Page then helps a satisfied or curious reader discover the rest of that work.
Build the manuscript behind the profile
ShakespeareAI helps authors turn a book idea into a structured long-form draft with planned chapters and continuity. Revise it with human judgment, prepare the correct publishing files, and present the finished catalog accurately.
