Amazon KDP Publishing Timeline: How Long It Takes
Most books submitted through Kindle Direct Publishing become Live within three business days, but that is only one milestone. Search visibility, linked formats, cover thumbnails, samples, and marketplace availability can each arrive later. A realistic KDP launch plan separates those stages instead of treating the first Live email as the finish line.
KDP timing at a glance:
- New book or update: generally up to 3 business days to become Live.
- Low-content book: up to 10 business days.
- Amazon search results: up to 72 hours after the book is Live.
- eBook and print edition linking: 48 hours to 1 week after both are Live.
- Read Sample: 7–8 business days for eBooks and 9–10 for print.
These are estimates, not service guarantees. This guide uses Amazon's official KDP Timelines, Book Status, and Publishing & Review pages, reviewed August 1, 2026. Check the timer, status, and messages in your own Bookshelf because title type, marketplace, rights checks, and technical delays can change the result.
What happens after you click Publish?
KDP does not send a submitted file straight to the store. The title moves through a sequence of states, and editing is unavailable during key stages:
- In Review: Amazon checks the book against its content and formatting guidelines. The title is locked, and KDP says the review cannot be expedited or cancelled.
- Publishing: The title passed review and Amazon is preparing its store availability. Editing remains locked.
- Live: The title is available for purchase in at least the relevant marketplace. Store features can still be processing.
If a title moves from In Review back to Draft, Amazon found something that requires attention. Read the associated email, correct the specific issue, preview the revised file, and resubmit. Do not repeatedly upload guesses; a controlled correction is faster and reduces the chance of introducing a new problem.
New-publication timeline by format
| Milestone | Kindle eBook | Paperback or hardcover |
|---|---|---|
| Detail page | Up to 72 hours | Up to 72 hours on Amazon.com; up to 5 days in other marketplaces |
| Low-content title | Depends on title type | Up to 10 business days |
| Cover thumbnail | Up to 72 hours | Up to 72 hours |
| Search visibility | Up to 72 hours after the title is Live | |
| Edition linking | 48 hours to 1 week after each edition is Live, if metadata matches | |
| Read Sample | 7–8 business days | 9–10 business days |
Print timing can differ by store. Amazon's current guidance says a paperback or hardcover detail page may take up to 30 days to appear on Amazon.ca. That makes a Canada-first launch especially important to test with a direct marketplace link rather than assuming Amazon.com timing applies everywhere.
Why “Live” does not mean “fully propagated”
A Live KDP status confirms that the book is available, but Amazon's connected systems update on different schedules. A direct detail-page link may work before the title appears for a keyword search. The eBook may be purchasable before Amazon links it to its paperback. The cover may display before Read Sample is ready.
Use the View on Amazon menu beside the title in your Bookshelf to check each marketplace directly. If the direct page works but search does not, allow the published search window to pass. If two formats remain separate after a week, first compare their title, subtitle, author, contributor, language, edition, and series metadata character by character.
A safer two-week KDP launch schedule
Authors using “release now” should submit well before a public launch date. A practical buffer looks like this:
| Timing | Action | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 14+ days before launch | Finish editing, rights checks, disclosures, metadata, cover, and export | The package is final, not a placeholder |
| 10 business days before | Submit early, especially for low-content books | Bookshelf changes to In Review |
| After Live | Open the direct link for every target marketplace | Price, cover, description, and buy button |
| Next 72 hours | Check search and cover propagation | Title and author searches find the book |
| Within 1 week | Check edition linking | Kindle, paperback, and hardcover share a page where eligible |
| 7–10 business days | Inspect Read Sample | Opening pages, navigation, and formatting are correct |
| Public launch | Send readers to a tested canonical store link | No unpublished assumptions remain |
This schedule is deliberately conservative. If the date must be exact, compare the KDP pre-order and scheduled-release options. Kindle pre-orders and scheduled print releases have different visibility and file deadlines, so choose based on the format and launch experience you actually need.
How long do KDP updates take?
Publishing an update begins another processing cycle, and different fields have different estimates. Amazon currently lists these common windows:
- eBook contributors, title, description, publisher, ISBN, or keywords: about 48 hours.
- eBook categories, manuscript, or cover: up to 72 hours.
- eBook list price: about 24 hours.
- Print manuscript or cover: up to 72 hours; low-content books can take up to 10 business days.
- Print list price: 72 hours to 5 business days, depending on the change.
- Updated Read Sample: 7–8 business days for eBooks and 9–10 for print.
A Live book can show “Updates in review” or “Updates publishing.” Readers can still buy the existing live version while the changes process. Keep the exact source file and submission date in your records so you can tell which version is currently available.
Prepare a package that is less likely to bounce back
- Preview the complete manuscript in Kindle Previewer or KDP Print Previewer.
- Make the title, subtitle, author, language, series, and edition fields match the cover and manuscript.
- Confirm print trim size, margins, bleed, fonts, and image resolution.
- Remove comments, tracked changes, placeholders, and private document links.
- Verify you have rights to the text, images, fonts, translations, and other included material.
- Answer KDP's AI-generated content question accurately; editing and responsibility still belong to the publisher.
- Save a dated copy of the submitted files and screenshots of important settings.
If a file is rejected or the previewer flags a problem, use the KDP manuscript upload errors guide. For print dimensions, follow the trim size and margins guide before generating a replacement PDF.

Start with the AI Book WriterWhat to do when KDP seems stuck
- Check the exact status beside the format in your KDP Bookshelf.
- Count business days, not calendar days, and compare the correct book type and marketplace.
- Check the email address attached to the KDP account, including spam, for a request or rejection notice.
- Use View on Amazon to separate a search-index delay from an unavailable detail page.
- Do not create a duplicate edition simply because search, linking, or Read Sample is still within its published window.
- If the relevant estimate has passed, contact KDP Support with the title, format, ASIN or ISBN, marketplace, submission time, status, and screenshots.
Describe one issue at a time. “Paperback ASIN X has been Live for eight days but is not linked to eBook ASIN Y; title, author, language, and edition metadata match” is easier to investigate than “my book is broken.”
