Use a KDP proof copy to inspect a print book before publication. Use author copies after the book is live when you need clean copies for events, reviewers, giveaways, or direct sales. They cost the same way, but their availability, markings, quantity limits, and permitted uses differ.

What is a KDP proof copy?

A proof is a physical test of a paperback or hardcover before its publication. You can request one while the title is in Draft, provided the files have passed and been approved in Print Previewer. KDP places a “Not for Resale” watermark on the cover and uses a unique barcode without the book's ISBN, making the copy unsuitable for retail use.

The watermark does not reduce the proof's value as a production check. Its purpose is to let you judge the actual paper, ink, binding, trim, cover alignment, margins, images, and reading experience before customers can buy the edition. A screen preview should catch obvious file problems; a physical proof reveals how the design behaves as a manufactured object.

What is a KDP author copy?

An author copy is a print of a live paperback or hardcover sold to the author at print cost. It does not carry the proof watermark. You may give it away or resell it at an event, through your own store, or directly to a reader. KDP does not pay a royalty on that transaction, and the order does not appear as a sale in KDP Reports.

Author copies come from the live edition. Draft changes are not included. If your Bookshelf says “Live with unpublished changes,” ordering before the update finishes can produce the previous version. KDP also warns that a recently updated title can occasionally be fulfilled from a copy printed before the change. Check the printing date in the book when version timing matters.

How much do proof and author copies cost?

KDP calculates the author price as the book's print cost in the selected marketplace multiplied by the number of copies. Trim size, page count, ink, paper, and binding influence that print cost. KDP does not offer an additional volume discount for these orders.

Printing is only part of the landed cost. Add shipping and applicable taxes before deciding how many author copies to buy. KDP says proof and author copy orders do not qualify for free or Prime shipping; available services and the final charge appear at checkout. For direct sales, calculate margin from the complete landed cost per copy, not just the printing charge.

How to order a KDP proof copy

1. Upload the final interior and cover files for the paperback or hardcover.
2. Open Print Previewer, inspect every page, resolve errors, and approve the preview.
3. Return to the KDP Bookshelf and open the title's ellipsis menu.
4. Select Request Printed Proofs.
5. Choose a quantity of up to 5 and the marketplace appropriate for the delivery address.
6. Submit the request. KDP says it sends a checkout link by email within 4 hours; the order is removed from the cart if it is not completed within 24 hours.
7. Complete payment through the corresponding Amazon marketplace.

You can ship a proof to another address, including an editor or designer, but the “Not for Resale” marking remains. If the email does not arrive, check the address connected to the KDP account and the Amazon cart before restarting the request.

How to order KDP author copies

1. Wait until the print edition shows as Live in the KDP Bookshelf.
2. Select Order Author Copies for the title. KDP notes that this option may take up to an additional 24 hours to appear after the book goes live.
3. Enter a quantity of up to 999 and select the marketplace for the shipping destination.
4. Proceed to the cart on that Amazon marketplace and complete checkout.

If the cart looks empty, confirm you are signed in and viewing the same Amazon marketplace chosen in KDP. Shipping support varies by destination. For example, KDP currently directs Canadian paperback orders through Amazon.ca but hardcover copies for delivery to Canada through Amazon.com.

What to inspect in a physical proof

Mark changes in one master list, correct the source files, re-export, and review the new Print Previewer result. For significant cover, margin, image, or pagination changes, order another proof. A second copy costs less than replacing event stock or disappointing early readers.

When author copies make business sense

• Launch events and signings: order enough stock for realistic attendance, with a small buffer.
• Review and media outreach: send clean copies only after the edition has passed proof review.
• Giveaways: include the landed book cost and outbound postage in the campaign budget.
• Direct sales: set a price that covers printing, inbound shipping, payment fees, packaging, tax obligations, and delivery to the buyer.
• Personal copies: keep an archive copy of each materially revised edition.

Ordering 999 copies is a platform limit, not a recommendation. Print-on-demand is useful because you can test demand with a smaller batch. Large orders tie up cash, occupy storage, and increase the impact of any unnoticed production issue.

1. Finish editing and lock the manuscript.
2. Choose the final KDP trim size and margins.
3. Format the interior, finalize page count, and prepare the correctly sized print cover.
4. Upload both files and approve them in Print Previewer.
5. Order a proof and inspect it systematically.
6. Correct issues, upload the revisions, and repeat physical review when needed.
7. Complete metadata, pricing, rights, and any required AI-content disclosure.
8. Publish, wait for the edition to become Live, then order author copies for launch use.
