Amazon KDP Select: Should Your eBook Be Exclusive?
KDP Select places a Kindle eBook in Kindle Unlimited and unlocks Amazon promotion tools, but the trade is real: that digital edition must remain exclusive to Amazon during each 90-day term. The right choice depends on your readers, catalog, launch plan, and willingness to test with actual data.
The short answer: consider KDP Select when Kindle Unlimited readers are important to your genre and you can commit the eBook to Amazon for 90 days. Publish wide when access to Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, libraries, or direct eBook sales is central to your strategy. Neither choice guarantees discovery.
This guide uses Amazon's official KDP Select overview, benefits, Kindle Countdown Deal, and cancellation guidance, reviewed August 3, 2026. Program terms change, so confirm the live rules in your KDP account before enrolling.
What KDP Select is—and is not
KDP Select is a free, optional 90-day program for Kindle eBooks. When you enroll a title, Amazon automatically includes it in Kindle Unlimited (KU). Subscribers can read it through KU while the eBook remains available for ordinary Kindle purchases.
Select is not a separate publishing format, a paid advertising package, or a promise that Amazon will promote your book. It adds a subscription-reading channel and makes the enrolled eBook eligible for program-specific promotions. You still need a strong book package, relevant metadata, reader-focused marketing, and a launch plan.
The exclusivity rule in plain English
During enrollment, the digital format of the enrolled book must be exclusive to KDP. Do not sell, distribute, or give away that eBook through another retailer, your own store, a public download page, or another digital-book platform during the term.
Amazon's guidance says you may continue distributing print, audio, video, and other non-digital-book formats elsewhere. That means a paperback can remain available through other print channels and an audiobook can use a separate distributor. The restriction follows the enrolled eBook, not your entire author business.
What authors receive in return
Kindle Unlimited page-read earnings
KU readers can borrow and read the eBook. Authors earn a share of the monthly KDP Select Global Fund based on qualifying pages customers read for the first time. The effective per-page amount is not fixed: the fund and total eligible reading change each month. Model KU income separately from retail eBook sales instead of assuming a guaranteed rate.
Free Book Promotions
An enrolled eBook can be offered free for up to five days during a 90-day term. The days can be grouped or split. A free promotion may support a series launch or reader acquisition, but downloads alone do not guarantee later purchases, reviews, or read-through.
Kindle Countdown Deals
A Countdown Deal creates a time-limited discount with a visible clock on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk. Amazon currently requires at least 30 days in Select before a title qualifies, price stability around the promotion, and scheduling in advance. Only one promotion type—a Free Book Promotion or a Countdown Deal—can be used within the same Select term.
| Decision factor | KDP Select | Wide eBook distribution |
|---|---|---|
| Retail reach | Kindle Store plus Kindle Unlimited | Amazon and selected non-Amazon stores or library channels |
| Digital exclusivity | Required for each 90-day term | Not required by the strategy itself |
| Subscription income | Share of Select fund based on qualifying KU pages read | Depends on each distributor and library program |
| Amazon promotion tools | Free Book Promotions or Countdown Deal eligibility | No Select-only promotion access |
| Operational work | One main eBook storefront and reporting system | More storefronts, metadata, links, and reports to manage |
When a 90-day Select test makes sense
- Your comparable books and genre have visible KU readership.
- You have a series or backlist that can benefit from read-through.
- You do not yet have meaningful sales on non-Amazon eBook stores.
- You have a specific promotion and measurement plan for the term.
- You can keep the eBook exclusive without breaking promises to direct buyers or subscribers.
A test is most useful when you define success first. Record retail units, KU pages read, estimated royalties, advertising spend, email growth, and read-through to the next title. Compare profit and audience growth, not only downloads or rank screenshots.
When publishing wide may be stronger
- You already have readers buying on Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, or library platforms.
- You want to sell eBooks directly from your website or bundle them with other products.
- Retailer diversification and long-term availability matter more than Select promotions.
- Your marketing relies on universal book links, library access, or partnerships outside Amazon.
- You cannot reliably remove every other digital edition for the full term.
Wide distribution often takes patience. A quiet first month outside Amazon does not prove the strategy cannot work, just as one strong KU month does not guarantee repeatable income. Judge each option over a timeframe that fits your release cadence and catalog.
Enrollment, renewal, and cancellation
- Open the Kindle eBook in your KDP Bookshelf and choose Manage KDP Select.
- Review the exclusivity terms and current start and end dates.
- Confirm that no other digital edition remains available.
- Enroll, then record the 90-day end date and planned promotion dates.
- Before renewal, review the term's results and decide whether to continue.
Amazon says Select titles automatically renew every 90 days unless you opt out before the next term. Its current cancellation page provides a three-day cancellation window from the start of enrollment; after that, contact support or turn off renewal so the title exits at term end. Pre-order enrollment cannot be cancelled until the eBook releases.
A better 90-day experiment
- Before day 1: proof the eBook, verify links and back matter, remove other digital listings, and save baseline sales.
- Days 1–30: establish normal retail and KU performance before interpreting a promotion.
- Days 31–75: run one planned Select promotion and track cost, downloads or sales, KU reading, and series read-through.
- By day 76: decide whether to renew. Leave time to change the setting before the next term starts.
- After the term: if going wide, wait until exclusivity ends before publishing the digital edition elsewhere.
Keep the experiment ethical and reader-focused. Do not manipulate reads, incentivize dishonest reviews, or use misleading claims. If the manuscript was AI-assisted, follow KDP's current disclosure requirements and perform a human edit for accuracy, rights, continuity, and reader value.

How long does KDP Select exclusivity last?
Each term lasts 90 days and renews automatically unless you opt out before renewal.
Can print and audio editions be sold elsewhere?
Yes. Amazon's exclusivity requirement applies to the enrolled eBook's digital format, not print, audio, or video editions.
Does KDP Select guarantee more income?
No. It adds KU page-read income potential and promotion eligibility, but earnings still depend on the book, audience, reading, sales, and marketing.
Can I leave KDP Select?
Amazon currently permits cancellation within three days of the term's start. Otherwise, contact support or disable automatic renewal and wait for the current term to end.
