Amazon KDP Expanded Distribution: What Authors Need to Know

KDP Expanded Distribution can make an eligible paperback orderable beyond Amazon through distributors serving bookstores, libraries, online retailers, and academic institutions. It is free to enable, but it is not guaranteed bookstore placement—and its 40% royalty formula leaves less room than a sale through an Amazon marketplace.

This guide is based on Amazon's official Expanded Distribution, Paperback Royalty, and Low-Content Books guidance, reviewed August 2, 2026. KDP and distributor requirements change, so confirm eligibility and estimated royalty in your own Bookshelf before publishing.

What KDP Expanded Distribution actually does

Booksellers and libraries usually buy through large distributors rather than opening retail accounts with every author. When Amazon accepts your paperback into Expanded Distribution, it supplies the book's data and makes the title available to its distribution partners in the United States and United Kingdom. Buyers elsewhere may also order through those distributors.

Three different outcomes are easy to confuse:

1. Available to distributors: your eligible title enters the wider supply catalog.
2. Listed by a bookseller or library supplier: a downstream system displays the record.
3. Ordered or stocked: an individual buyer chooses to purchase copies.

Expanded Distribution helps with the first outcome. Amazon explicitly does not promise distributor acceptance, a listing at any named retailer, a library order, or shelf placement. Authors still need an audience, professional metadata, a credible cover, and outreach appropriate to the channel.

Eligibility checklist

Your title must be a paperback available on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk and meet the distributor's current requirements. Before you set pricing, check all of these:

Common 5.5 x 8.5 and 6 x 9 paperback configurations have broad eligibility across KDP's listed black-and-white and color combinations, but other sizes have restrictions. Check the live chart before designing the interior; changing paper type later can remove eligibility.

Content that may not qualify

Amazon's current exclusions include public-domain content, coloring books, poorly translated content, books with frequent blank or lined pages, and works with excessively reused or repeated material. Low-content books are not supported, regardless of whether you supply your own ISBN. The official page also lists additional topics and formats that distributors may decline.

This is another reason to create a substantive, carefully edited manuscript. If you use an AI-assisted workflow, disclose AI-generated content accurately when KDP asks, verify rights, fact-check the text, remove repetition, and complete a human editorial pass. Expanded Distribution is not a workaround for quality or content requirements.

How royalties are calculated

An Expanded Distribution sale earns 40% of the list price effective in that channel, minus printing costs, applicable taxes, and withholding. The basic calculation is:

Amazon's example uses a $15 paperback with a $5 printing cost:

• 40% of $15 is $6.
• $6 minus the $5 printing cost leaves a $1 estimated royalty.

The same print book sold directly through an Amazon marketplace may use a 50% or 60% rate depending on its list price and marketplace. That difference matters. A price that produces an acceptable Amazon royalty may leave very little through Expanded Distribution.

These examples illustrate the formula; they are not quotes for your book. Page count, ink, marketplace, tax treatment, and future cost changes affect the result. Use KDP's pricing grid for the actual manuscript and avoid raising the price solely to chase a theoretical wholesale sale if the new price makes the book uncompetitive for readers.

When Expanded Distribution is a good fit

The option can be sensible when:

• you want a no-fee, low-maintenance route to broader paperback availability;
• readers, event organizers, or librarians have asked for a non-Amazon ordering path;
• your trim, content, ISBN, and rights meet the program requirements;
• the 40% formula leaves a royalty you can accept; and
• you understand that you must still create demand.

It is less compelling when bookstore distribution is central to your business and you need specific trade terms, return options, direct control over metadata feeds, or a distribution relationship outside KDP. Compare services carefully instead of submitting the same ISBN to overlapping distribution systems. Amazon says an ISBN already submitted through another distribution service is not eligible.

How to enroll a paperback

1. Open your KDP Bookshelf and select the ellipsis beside the paperback.
2. Choose Edit paperback rights & pricing, or Edit print book pricing for a published title.
3. Confirm the territories where you hold distribution rights.
4. Review the list price, printing cost, and estimated Expanded Distribution royalty.
5. Check the Expanded Distribution box for each available marketplace.
6. Select Publish Your Paperback Book to save and submit the change.

Checking the box without selecting Publish does not enroll the title. The process begins after you submit and the paperback returns to Live status.

Plan for an eight-week distribution window

After acceptance, Amazon says it can take up to eight weeks for a title to become available for booksellers and libraries to order. Changes to details, content, or pricing can also take up to eight weeks to flow through outside systems. During that period, third-party listings may show older data.

Build that lag into any outreach:

1. Finalize the title, subtitle, author name, cover, interior, ISBN, and price.
2. Publish and inspect a physical proof before promoting the print edition.
3. Enable Expanded Distribution only after the package is stable.
4. Allow the full distribution window before diagnosing a missing catalog record.
5. Give buyers the exact title, author, format, and ISBN to reduce lookup errors.

Reporting and payment timing

Expanded Distribution transactions appear separately in KDP reports. Amazon says royalties update about 30 days after the end of the month in which the sale occurred and are paid about 60 days after the end of the month in which the distributor reports the sale—roughly 90 days after the reported sales month. Payment thresholds, tax withholding, and payment-method timing may also apply.

Because downstream reporting is delayed, do not expect a bookstore or library order to appear like an immediate Amazon marketplace sale. Keep your own outreach notes, but use KDP's final report for units and royalties.
